Midwest litigation firm HeplerBroom announced it has significantly enhanced its presence in Chicago with the addition of 16 new attorneys. The firm now has 136 attorneys working in key jurisdictions in the Midwest. The new attorneys add substantial depth to the firm’s insurance practice as well as expand its reach in professional liability and construction litigation.

Super Lawyers Linda Hay and Anne Oldenburg Bring Their Team to HeplerBroom
The Chicago-based firm Hay & Oldenburg adds industry-specific depth to HeplerBroom’s professional liability practice. Partners Linda Hay, Anne Oldenburg, and Patricia Noonan are well known for their years of experience in legal, medical, and dental malpractice. Their reputation also extends to insurance litigation related to hospitals and nursing homes, as well as professional licensing issues. “We take a personal interest in each of our cases,” said Linda Hay. “Clients keep coming back because we’re passionate, fair, and ethical.” Also joining are Associates Tammera Banasek, Anthony Joseph, Susan Wagener, and Adam Shapiro.

First-party Insurance Litigation a Prized Skill
Partners Rick Hammond, Eric Moch, and Isaac Melton bring to the firm a rare skill in first-party insurance litigation. Their insurance experience is broad, however, including coverage, claims defense, bad faith, fraud, and municipality litigation, among other areas. The six-person team also includes Associates James DuChateau, Gabriel Judd, and David Albaugh. “We’re very pleased to be able to offer our insurance industry clients such specialized representation in insurance claims,” stated HeplerBroom Partner Larry Hepler.

Recently Named “2016 Leading Lawyer” Builds the Construction Law Group
Aleen Tiffany, principal and owner of Aleen R. Tiffany, P.C. in suburban Crystal Lake, also joined HeplerBroom as a Partner, along with Associates Holly Whitlock and Jamie Rein. Tiffany has pioneered emphasis on risk transfer in construction litigation and other innovations in insurance defense. The team enhances the firm’s ability to handle complex civil litigation matters in all aspects of commercial construction, including injuries, defects, contracts, risk transfer, and mechanics lien claims. HeplerBroom Partner Jeff Hebrank said, “We now have a full complement of lawyers and staff capable of handling any complex construction law or litigation matter. Aleen and her team are a valuable addition.”

Partner

Linda J. Hay was formerly an equity partner in the Chicago firm of Hay & Oldenburg LLC. She focuses her practice on the defense of professional liability cases, with a specialization in legal, medical, and dental malpractice. She regularly defends both hospitals and nursing homes, as well as all types of professionals in licensing and disciplinary matters. She has tried numerous cases to successful verdict and handled many cases through successful appeal.

Previously, Ms. Hay served as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Illinois, Civil Appeals Division, where she handled appeals involving state agencies. She also served as a judicial clerk for the Honorable William R. Quinlan of the First District of the Appellate Court of Illinois, as well as the Honorable Thomas E. Hoffman of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Law Division.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign in 1982. She earned her Juris Doctor from the John Marshall Law School in 1986.

Ms. Hay is admitted to the bars of the Illinois Supreme Court, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit. She is a member of the Federal Trial Bar, the American Bar Association and its Legal Professional Liability Committee, the Illinois State Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, the Association of Defense Trial Attorneys, Defense Research Institute, the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel, the American and Chicagoland Healthcare Risk Management Societies, and the Illinois Association of Healthcare Attorneys.

Anne Oldenburg

Anne M. Oldenburg was formerly an equity partner in the Chicago firm of Hay & Oldenburg LLC. She focuses her practice on the defense of healthcare professionals, including all aspects of civil litigation, including appeals. She also represents professionals before state agencies and licensing boards. She has tried numerous cases to successful verdict and handled many cases through successful appeal.

Previously, Ms. Oldenburg was an attorney with a St. Louis law firm and handled all aspects of insurance defense litigation. She also served as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Ben K. Miller of the Illinois Supreme Court and for the Honorable John T. McCullough of the Fourth District, Appellate Court of Illinois.

She graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ripon College in 1983. She earned her Juris Doctor with distinction from The John Marshall Law School in 1986.

Ms. Oldenburg is admitted to the bars of the Illinois Supreme Court; U. S. District Court Federal Trial Bar; and U.S. District Courts for the Northern, Central, and Southern Districts. Rick Hammond

Rick Hammond

Rick Hammond is a partner with the firm and focuses his practice on insurance law, including the litigation and trial of complex property insurance coverage matters; fire and explosion cases; the defense of municipalities, elected officials, and corporate executives in high profile business and municipal litigation cases; and bad faith defense. In addition to his law practice, he serves as an expert witness on insurance law-related issues and is an adjunct professor on insurance law at The John Marshall Law School.

Before practicing law, he was the Executive Director of the Insurance Committee for Arson Control (a national association representing more than 2,000 insurance carriers). Prior to that, he was the Assistant Deputy Director of the Illinois Department of Insurance, where he issued regulatory opinions on insurers’ compliance with Illinois insurance rules and codes, investigated complaints, and provided counsel on matters involving financially distressed insurers. For the first five years of his career, Mr. Hammond was an insurance agent and property claims adjuster.

He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southern Illinois University in 1975, earned his Chartered Life Underwriter credential from The American College in 1980, and obtained his Juris Doctor from The John Marshall Law School in 1988.

Mr. Hammond is admitted to the bars of the States of Illinois and Indiana and the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Illinois, the Northern and Southern Districts of Indiana, Southern District of Michigan, Eastern District of Wisconsin, Southern District of Colorado, and Eastern District of Missouri. Aleen Tiffany

Aleen Tiffany

Aleen Tiffany founded Aleen R. Tiffany, P.C. in 2005. Her practice includes all aspects of general liability litigation and risk transfer, with a primary focus on construction injury, defect, and contract, in conjunction with related commercial general liability coverage and risk management matters. An experienced trial attorney, she regularly handles the day-to-day issues facing general and sub-contractors and their insurers, including risk transfer and insurance coverage/tenders; contract evaluation and development; defense of catastrophic bodily injury claims; construction defect claims arising out of breach of contract, common law, and other warranty and statutory theories; and other contract, mechanics liens, and commercial matters faced regularly by corporate clients.

Before founding her own firm, Tiffany was a partner with a large litigation firm in Chicago, where she served as Vice Chair of the firm’s Construction Practice Group, Managing Partner of the firm’s McHenry County Office, co-chair of its Personal Lines Department, and co-chair of the firm’s Hiring Committee.

She graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in 1989. She earned her Juris Doctor degree from The John Marshall Law School, cum laude, in 1993.

Tiffany is admitted to the bars of the State of Illinois, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and the United States Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit. She has also been admitted pro hac vice in matters in California and Indiana. Eric Moch

Eric Moch

Eric W. Moch is a partner with the firm and focuses his practice on insurance law, personal injury defense and the defense of municipalities and professionals, with a special emphasis in first- and third-party coverage, contractual indemnity, bad faith defense, and insurance fraud, including organized activity, staged and caused losses, and medical fraud. He also counsels, represents, and volunteers on behalf of not-for-profit organizations. He has extensive civil litigation experience in Illinois state and federal courts, including in excess of 40 jury verdicts and several published appeals.

Before joining HeplerBroom, Mr. Moch had nearly 20 years of experience as a litigation and trial attorney for firms in the Chicagoland area and represented national insurers, businesses, not-for-profit organizations, municipalities, professionals, and individuals. He analyzed and evaluated legal malpractice claims and helped create a claims special investigations unit for combating costly insurance fraud.

In 1994, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Dayton. He earned his Juris Doctor from The John Marshall Law School in 1997.

Mr. Moch is admitted to the bars of the Illinois Supreme Court and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. He is a member of the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel and the National Society of Professional Insurance Investigators.

Isaac Melton

Isaac Melton

Partner

Isaac A. Melton is a partner with the firm and focuses his practice on insurance law, including bodily injury and first- and third-party coverage claims, with an emphasis on bad faith defense and insurance fraud, including medical fraud, staged losses, and organized activity.

Before joining HeplerBroom, Mr. Melton was an attorney with a Chicago-based regional firm, as well as several smaller firms. In addition, he served as a judicial extern with the Honorable Allen S. Goldberg of the Circuit Court of Cook County.

In 2004, he received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a minor in psychology from the University of Iowa. He earned his Juris Doctor with a Certificate in Litigation and Alternative Dispute Resolution from Chicago-Kent College of Law in 2007.

Mr. Melton is admitted to the bars of Illinois and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. He is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association and the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel.

Patricia Noonan

Patricia Noonan

Patricia M. Noonan is a partner with the firm. She concentrates her practice on the defense of professional liability claims, with an emphasis on legal malpractice claims and appellate practice, as well as experience in a variety of litigation areas and insurance coverage matters. She has tried numerous cases through verdict and appeals in the Illinois appellate courts and up to the Illinois Supreme Court.  Ms. Noonan actively presents and publishes in the field of legal malpractice.

Previously, Ms. Noonan served as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Robert Chapman Buckley of the 1st District Illinois Appellate Court.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Chicago State University in 1985 and earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Illinois College of Law in 1988.

Ms. Noonan is admitted to the bar of the State of Illinois, the U.S. District Court of the Northern District of Illinois, the Federal Trial Bar, and the United States 7th Circuit Court of Appeals.
